The Master of Arts Program in the Humanities (MAPH) Staff know the cost of higher education can be significant. We strive to be open and honest about the expenses associated with attaining a master's degree, fellowship opportunities, loan options, and all other financial aspects of graduate education at the University of Chicago.
Tuition, Fees, Expenses
Full-time MAPH students take three for-credit courses per quarter. Total tuition for a full-time MAPH student in the 2018-2019 school year is $57,996. Total fees and expenses are $30,627. Please note that the listed expenses are an estimate. Many of your expenses can change based on your personal budget.
Tuition Aid
A number of MAPH Fellowships are awarded each year to applicants who demonstrate exceptional academic promise. These awards typically range from partial to half tuition. There is no separate application process for these awards. Fellowship recipients are notified of their funding package when they receive their admission decision.

Student Loans
Many MAPH students take out loans to help finance their education. All students interested in receiving federal grants, loans, and work-study funds should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using school code 001774.
While the MAPH Staff can answer general questions about loan funding, the Financial Aid Office is the best resource for information on student loans, whether federal or private, at the University of Chicago.
International Students
Since international students are not eligible for federal loans, grants, or work-study, financing a MAPH degree can be more challenging. The University of Chicago’s Office of International Affairs (OIA) has extensive resources for international students looking for financial aid. Additionally, many international students find funding through the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Student Employment
MAPH students may also supplement their finances with student employment, though we encourage students to work no more than 12 hours per week. All students interested in participating in the federal work-study program should fill out the FAFSA.
International Students
While international students are not eligible for federal work-study, most can work on-campus. More information on international student employment during the MAPH year can be found on the Office of International Affairs’ website.
